Will Google boost Add On development?

Now that Chrome starts getting its first users, a question pops up.

Does Google have plans on implementing add ons that are standard nowadays for developers and endusers (like Firebug, NoScript etc), or will this field be on the community hands?

Will there be an API like the guys from Mozilla Firefox give out?
